About this work

Description

Regarding the funds of Crichton Royal Institution, Mrs Crichton's continued intention to make use of funds set aside to benefit schools in India, her wish to introduce a lower rate of board for patients in 'reduced circumstances'; a proposal to remove the present offices, and her views on any additions to buildings, namely that no further additions should be made to Southern Counties Asylum. There is also mention of the 'Queens Commissioner with whom we are threatened.'

Biographical note

Admiral Johnston of Cowhill Tower was one of James Crichton's five original Trustees. The former Health Board Archivist has estimated the date of the original letter to be c.1855. There is a reference on page 60 of 'The Chronicle of the Crichton Royal' by C. C. Easterbrook with a quote from the letter, and the suggestion it was written around 1853. Reference is also made to the original letter on page 70 of 'Crichton Royal Institution, Dumfries', by James Carmont.
