Biographical note

The Female Admission Hospital opened in 1904 and was part of the expansion of Crichton Royal Institution into a segragate system, with several buildings providing different functions for patients. The building was later renamed Rutherford House and was part of the Second Department. It provided accommodation for new admissions, who were assesed and then moved to another part of the hospital, and a ward for patients confined to bed. There was also a Male Hospital, which opened in May 1904, and was later named Carmont House. The opening of the two hospitals helped to ease accommodation in the Second House.
