Dated August 20, 1810, and signed: James Jackson; John C. Warren. It was sent to several of the "wealthiest and most influential citizens" of Boston, according to N. I. Bowditch, A history of the Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, 1872, p. 3, and "may be regarded as the cornerstone of [the] institution." The corporation was chartered by the legislature in the following February; and the Asylum was opened in 1818, the hospital in 1821
