Description

Measurement schedules completed by visitors to Galton's Anthropometric Laboratory stand at the 1884 International Health Exhibition in South Kensington.

Each schedule records the following information:

Sex.

Colour of eyes.

Date.

Initials.

Eyesight: right; left (greatest distance reading diamond type).

Colour sense, goodness of.

Judgement of eye: error percentage in dividing a line of 15 inches in 3 parts; in 2 parts; error in degrees of estimating squareness.

Hearing: keenness can hardly be tested here due owing to the noises and echoes.

Highest audible note: between x + y vibrations per second.

Breathing power: greatest expiration in cubic inches.

Swiftness of blow of hand in feet per second.

Strength of squeeze: right hand; left hand (lbs).

Strength of pull (lbs).

Span of arms (from finger tips of opposite hands).

Height: sitting, measured from seat of chair; standing in shoes (less height of heel; height without shoes.

Weight in ordinary indoor clothing (lbs).

Additional questions: age last birthday; married or unmarried; birthplace; occupation; residence in town, suburb or country?
