Description

Galton's journal for his expedition to Damaraland [later Namibia], covering the period August 1850-August 1851. Bound in hard cover, 240 ff. The journal consists of:

Diary entries and notes.

Copy correspondence between Francis Galton, Captain Jonker [Afrikaner] and Reverend Heer Kolbe.

Illustrations and maps in pencil and watercolour.

Navigational observations, projected routes, records of lunar distances, latitude and longitude, star charts, and various calculations.

Loose sketches and notes are enclosed.

The back pages contain [Khoekhoe?] vocabulary lists, and a rough (incomplete) index.
