Temple Family

Collection of medical receipts found at East Sheen House, probably after the death of the second Viscountess Palmerston [née Mee (Mary)] in 1805. Containing contemporary copies of two 'Consultes' on behalf of Henry Temple, 1st Viscount Palmerston [1673?-1757], and various medical receipts in English copied out or endorsed by Henry Temple 2nd Viscount [1739-1802]. With other receipts by various hands, etc. The items have been numbered in pencil. 1-4, 7, 15. Receipts probably by the hand of the 2nd Viscount. 5. Banks (Sir J.). Copy of a receipt for the Stone, 'from Mr. Banks'. 6. Copy of a 'Consulte' for 'Phthisie' on behalf of the 1st Viscount. Signed by [François] Chicoyneux [1672-1752], [Antoine] Deider [ -1746] and [Jean] Verny [1657-1741], Montpellier, 15/4/1724 (4 pp.). Stated by the owner to be '1st Viscount Palmerston's writing' but is more probably a contemporary copy. 8, 9. Receipts endorsed by the 2nd Viscount. 10. Receipt for 'Rheume in the eyes'. Signed 'N. EYRE' (1 p.). 11. Receipt for Scurvy. Signed Sister MILLINGTON (1 p.). 12. Noble (Samuel). Printed letter on a cure for Gout, addressed to R. Fisher, Esqre. Dated Greenwich, 1846 (1 p.). 13. Receipt for 'Lowness of spirits'. Signed S. BENTINCK (1 p.). 14. 16-22, 24-28. Receipts for the 2nd Viscount by different hands. 23. Copy of a 'Consulte' for pain in the chest and spitting of blood, for the 1st Viscount. Signed GROSSE, dated Paris, 12/11/1723 (3 pp.). 29. Antonio (Gaspar). S. J. Regiment and vertue of ye Cordiall Stones. Translated out of the original Portuguese. Printed in Goa at the College of St. Paul (2 pp.). 30. Account for medicines supplied to the late Richard Hall Esqre. by Savory and Moore, Chemists to the Queen, London, 1862 (2 pp.). Produced in East Sheen.

Henry Temple, 1st Viscount, represented several English Boroughs and was created Viscount Palmerston in 1723. He was a supporter of Walpole, quarrelled with Swift, and made improvements at East Sheen House [see the Dictionary of National Biography]. His grandson Henry, 2nd Viscount, was also an M.P. and in 1766 became a Lord of the Admiralty, and in 1777 of the Treasury [cf. ibid.]. His eldest son Henry John, 3rd Viscount [1784-1865] was one of Britian's most illustrious Foreign Secretaries and Prime Ministers under Queen Victoria. None of the receipts in this collection appears to be connected with him.
