Collection of recipes, mainly medical, in formula format with precise ingredient measurements; for ointments, salves, balsams, tonics, waters, beers, spirits, wines, unctions, powders, cordials, "balls" (pills), syrups, elixirs, lozenges and diuretics. Many do not recommend a specific ailment for which they should be used to treat. Includes some veterinary recipes, "beast medicines" particularly for sick and calving cows, (pp.80-84, 101-102); household recipes for inks, waxes, varnish, herb tobacco (p.72), polishes, blacking, dyes, washing powder, glue, soaps, hair powder and bathing liquids; recipes for gin, brandy and gooseberry champaigne (p.127) and walnut ketchup (p.106-107); and something called the "Whitworth Diet Drink" (p.128) Recipes are written in the same hand up to p.107, thereafter it is in various different hands. Some recipe titles are in Latin form. An inscription has been scratched off on the inside front cover, and there are no other indications of ownership. In between pp.62-63 is a loose piece of paper with 5 ingredients written on it. No date, circa early 19th century. Contains comprehensive index at front of volume.
