About this work

Description

Collection of medical recipes in various hands.

The greater part of the collection (ff. 3-34) comprises recipes in a single, later 17th-century hand. Authorities include Dr Chamberlain (f. 3v), Dr Boles (f. 3v.), Dr Barker (f. 4), Dr Willis (f. 4v.), Dr Mason (f. 19v.), Lady Busbey (f. 23), Dr Dickenson (f. 24v.), Dr Nesby (f. 26v.), Lady Bedford (f. 27), Lady Tyrrel (ff. 27v., 31), Lady Allen (f. 31v.) and Lady Tuck (f. 34 and v.).

Additional, somewhat later entries follow, including 'An Infallible cure for the yellow Jaunders' and 'A Glyster for the Collicque', both ascribed to 'the Lady T Tyrrell'(f. 35-35v.).

Various later 17th or early 18th century hands have entered further recipes from the back of the volume. One hand has recorded the following prescriptions: 'Dr Paxton's dirrections for Frank for the eye water' (f. 38), 'an electuary for costiveness by Dr Frewin' (f. 39), 'the quieting draught ordered by Sir Ed. Harris for Frank to take after Physick' (f. 44), 'a Receipt for the Collick ordered by Dr Keill, for one of my servants' (f. 46v.), and 'an other-reciet for the scurvy, ordered for Sir Harry Tyrrell' (f. 47v.). Another, early 18th-century hand has recorded 'Directions from Nurse Brewer for a young child' (f. 43).
