About this work

Description

Collection of medical, veterinary and cookery receipts: by several hands.

pp. 1-16 of the second part, and some leaves at the beginning of the first part wanting.

This MS. is made up of two separate volumes bound together, probably in the 18th century. The first volume is almost entirely by the same hand, and seems to have been compiled by a Mrs Meade, as she speaks of remedies for an infant Nathanael Meade, who is perhaps the Sir Nath. Meade, Serjeant-at-Law, who died in 1760, as recorded in Musgrave. Many receipts in this volume are assigned to 'Dr. Thomas Lower'. It seems most probable that this is the Quaker brother of the more famous Richard Lower [1631-1691]. In the D.N.B. entry for Thomas Lower [1633-1720] 'Quaker sufferer', it is stated that he had qualified as a physician, and had perhaps practised in London.

The second volume - the first 16 pp. of which are missing - begins with a receipt dated 1717, and contains another dated 1727 (p. 149). It is also written by several different hands.
