Description

Artzneybuch (Incomplete). Written in a clear gothic book hand, 25 lines to a page. A few initials and headings in red, paragraph marks in red. Fol. 1 Dis ist das gewerste und beste buch das nun / ienant ist wan die wisesten artzate es macht [?] / yppocras galienus Constantinus Bartholo / meus Sant cosmas und sant damianus sint britder / und suchten und nammen usz allen artzat buchern / waz sy wisten und versucht hatten... 5, col. 1 [End of Table] Von dem alle ding sint / genatturt und von vil / andren dingen. / [Text begins] Wer nun die artzat / bucher iemer lernen wil... 83v [Contra pestilenciam scribitur in libro lilium. (i.e. Lilium medicinae Bernardi de Gordonio)]...so nemme dirr holcz und solt denn / dinen mund din antlut und din hende mit / (fol. 84) essich und mit wasser... On the verso of the un-numbered leaf is an inscription in the form of a St. Andrew's Cross: 'Dyser wass hat das ge / schrybenn Es ist / JACOB SYBENschyll / yge / in Friburg'. On the same leaf, by a somewhat later hand: 'Bin Hörtzzog von anniuar [? Hannover] bey där bastily bey dän grosen stucken'. A note on the recto of this leaf by another late 15th cent. hand refers to Junckher Heinrich von Peroman and a sum of 40 gulden in an account, which is dated St. Michael's Day 'anno domini milesimo quatersen[tes]imo' [sic], but the rest of the date has not been given. Pasted inside the upper cover is a vellum leaf containing medical receipts by a 14th cent. hand. Produced in Freiburg.

Physical description

1 volume 1 l. + 79 [84] ff. 4to. 21 x 14 cm. Original half-vellum binding over wooden boards, damaged: part of a metal clasp wanting. Ff. 16, 21, 36-38, and all after fol. 84 wanting. Only a small piece of fol. 84 remains, and the lower half of fol. 1 is torn away: ff. 2, 3 are torn, some margins are frayed, and many leaves are damp-stained.
