Arscott Family

Physical receipts. A collection of medical receipts, written mainly by two hands, with a few additions: preceded by 6 leaves of receipts by the second and later hand. The upper cover is inscribed 'Physical receipts'. The original compiler seems to have copied out the receipts from an earlier collection, as several are dated from 1697 [p. 50] onward. The latest date is 1776 [p. 121]. The additions are mostly made by the writer of the 6 leaves inserted at the beginning, and dated 1741-43, one of which is signed 'A.B.'

Purchased 1926.

From various named entries, this MS. seems to have been associated with the Arscott Family of Arscott in Devonshire, and these initials are almost certainly those of Arscott Bickford [1713-1771], High Sheriff of Devon in 1760.
