About this work

Description

The last 5 ll. contain receipts by different and later hands, also in German. On the fly-leaf is the name 'Paracelsus' by a contemporary hand. Inside the upper cover is a three line inscription beginning 'Allein nach der Herr Jesu Christo'. A note in pencil below this '? Writing of Melanchthon', probably written by Dr. Georg Kloss [1787-1854], a former owner whose book-plate is pasted in below the inscription. The attribution to Melanchthon seems very doubtful, as the script seems to be of the late 16th cent, and the great Reformer died in 1560; also it bears only a slight resemblance to the specimens of his hand given in Sotheby's Catalogue of the Kloss Sale, 7-26/5/1836. This volume has not been traced in this Catalogue, and it may possibly have been one of the five 4to. volumes of MS. which made up Lot 4641.
