About this work

Description

Notebook containing pharmaceutical, medical and household recipes in several hands, 19th century. The greater part of the contents is arranged in alphabetical order from Aqua to Unguent in a single hand of the early/mid 19th century (ff. 1-96v.), with an index or list of contents at the end (ff. 118-121). Further recipes and directions have been added in the same and later hands (ff. 96v.-116). Several of the latter are from newspapers. On f. 89v. are two prescriptions by J[oseph] Toynbee, the aural surgeon, dated 1856-57, for J M Albright, and on ff. 81r. and 96v. are prescriptions for the same person by J[onathan] H[utchinson], of 15 Cavendish Square, dated 1897. An earlier recipe for `thieves vinegar' is addressed to a certain Rachel Albright (f. 82r.).
