About this work

Description

Image bears the same 'flying toilet' symbol seen in related poster (Wellcome Library no. 755701i) and depicts a poor boy, foreign coins and a background image of the slums; according to lettering in 755701i, 'Flying Toilets is slang for wrapped up faeces that are flung on to roofs, into garbage heaps or into communal drains'; this poster dates to just before Feb 2002 when Europe switched to the euro and appeals for foreign coins to raise money to stop the 'Flying Toilet' problem for slum-dwellers specifically in Kibera's Laini Saba.

You can help a poor child at no cost. When Europe switches to the Euro in Februrary 2002, your European money will go down the drain. Use it now to stop flying toilets in Kibera. Bears logo: AMREF Lettering: 'Of the 8,000 children under five years living in Kibera Laini Saba, 80% suffer from preventable sanitation-related diseases like skin infections, diarrhoea and vomiting, worm infestations, malaria and pneumonia. Poor ventilation and congestion in homes, open sewage, dirty water and human waste strewn around are the areas in which these children sleep, eat and play ...'
