Description

This film is about Margaret and Willy, a young couple who both have cerebal palsy, live in a residential home and wish to marry. They frankly discuss their sexual and emotional needs, and their desire to live as normally as possible. Particular emphasis is laid on their need for privacy. They and other disabled couples discuss the opposition that their relationships have faced. 5 segments.

Segment 1 Margaret talks about how she and Willy are treated differently by others, although they love each other as other couples do. She says their treatment is akin to racial discrimination and segregation. She talks about her relationship history and her relationship with Willy. She helps Willy with his speech therapy. Segment 2 A group of schoolgirls comes to visit the hostel where Margaret and Willy live. Margaret talks about her need for privacy. Margaret and Willy are shown going to the park together and a poem by Willy is read out. Day-to-day life in their hostel is shown. Segment 3 Margaret says that working in factories is like slave labour for people with cerebral palsy. She also discusses how receiving money from charity is problematic for her. Segment 4 Margaret and Willy go to her mother's house for dinner. Margaret talks about how some parents always see their disabled children as children, never as adults, although her mother never has. Her mother says that Margaret needs a social life amongst people her own age. Margaret and Willy are seen in the pub with their friends. Segment 5 One man with cerebral palsy says that he earns less than the other workers at his factory because of his cerebral palsy. Another man says that disabled people disabilities are helped by having sex and being in love, that it is a kind of therapy. A couple are shown getting married. At the end of the film, there is an intimate portrayal of Margaret and Willy helping each other to bathe and getting into bed together.
