The image is based on that of the Iwo Jima Memorial in Washington which was erected to commemorate the most expensive battle in the history of the American Marine Corps: the victorious attack on the island Iwo Jima in Japan to allow for the an emergency airfield for fighter aircraft during WW11 - the original photograph was taken 'Flag raising on Iwo Jima, Feb 23, 1945' was taken by an Associated Press photographer, Joe Rosenthal
