About this work

Description

'Jack' Cornwell was wounded during the battle of Jutland in 1916 aboard the H.M.S. Chester and subsequently died, not yet 17 years old. He was awarded the Victoria Cross. This is a charity stamp with a portrait of him that would have been sold to raise funds for the ward named after him at the Star & Garter Home (presumably the one on Richmond Hill,Surrey) for severely disabled sailors and soldiers.
