About this work

Description

Twenty people are standing or seated in Pasteur's laboratory at the Ecole Normale in Paris, 1886. In the centre a mother is holding a struggling child, aged about five years, whose abdomen is bared for the vaccination. The operator is J.-J. Grancher, seated and holding a syringe. Right of him stands L. Pasteur, in a cap, observing the patient, a letter in both hands. Behind them E. Viala, with pince-nez, assists. Left, an Arab and a Russian patient; right background, a group of onlookers with three fashionably-dressed ladies. All medical officers and students are wearing dark suits. On table to right, small uncovered glass containers
