About Biomedical Images
Biomedical Images comprises scientific images from research laboratories, clinical images from UK teaching hospitals, and illustrations and photographs by artists and photographers. The images are created using a variety of imaging techniques including scanning electron microscopy, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and photography. The biomedical and scientific areas covered include:
- molecular biology
Biomedical Images forms part of the Wellcome Images picture library. Wellcome Images also includes many images on historical, anthropological and cultural themes from the Wellcome Library's other collections.
Wellcome Image Awards
The Wellcome Image Awards are held every 15 months to celebrate the best of the new images added to the collection. The Awards recognise the creators of the most informative, striking and technically excellent images among recent acquisitions to the collection, as chosen by a panel of judges.

Accessing the Biomedical Images collection
To find contemporary medical images, search Wellcome Images. As well as searching by keyword, you can select the imaging technique as part of an advanced search option.
You can also do an All Catalogues search to find biomedical images.
All digital images are free to download and use for private study and non-commercial research.
